Artist Statement
Drawing from my interactions with the ever-changing landscape and culture of South Texas, I shift between traditional and non-traditional techniques with printmaking, fibers, and cyanotype with found objects. Such found objects vary from textiles, photographs, and trinkets I come across while wandering different parts of the Rio Grande Valley. Using found objects to create collages and prints is a way of documenting my interpretations and experiences with land and the cultural dynamics of my community. My creative process is a self-expression of memories and encounters with my surroundings that can resonate with others. The concepts of home and community fluctuate between the native environment and family characteristics commonly shared among Frontera communities. The roles of generational migrations, trauma, and conflicting dynamics can be the main characteristics in developing one’s identity. There is a constant energy of survival and growth with the ever-changing uses and connections to the land and its people along the Frontera.
